Embattled former MNsure Executive Director April Todd-Malmlov has landed a new job as senior vice president of data analytics with Avalere Health, a Washington-based health care consulting firm.

Todd-Malmlov, who resigned as head of the state's online health insurance exchange in December after a problematic rollout, has a background in the business of health care and public policy.

Before taking over the state's effort to build the MNsure exchange, Todd-Malmlov was the health economist at the Minnesota Department of Health and also spent nearly three years at Minnetonka-based UnitedHealth Group Inc., where she worked in strategic analysis and health policy issues.

After leaving MNsure, Todd-Malmlov said she was able to spend more time with family and to recharge after working long hours for three years to get the exchange off the ground.

"I'm really excited to be joining Avalere and to be out in D.C.," Todd-Malmlov said by phone Thursday. "I find this a very exciting opportunity where I can bring my background to grow this organization."

At Avalere Health, Todd-Malmlov will work with economists, policy experts, data modelers and programmers to lead Avalere's growing data analytics practice. The company works with government entities, nonprofit organizations and companies of all sizes.

"April's extensive experience in the private sector while at UnitedHealth Group, and her deep government experience in Minnesota will help bring insights to our clients today and increase our capacity to add value in the future," Avalere CEO and founder Dan Mendelson said in a statement.
