In the line of fire

Journalists often get a bad rap, but you've got to applaud those who put their lives on the line in dangerous countries to bring us the news. In "Which Way Is the Front Line From Here? The Life and Times of Tim Hetherington" (7 p.m., HBO), war correspondent Sebastian Junger pays tribute to his dear friend and celebrated war photographer, who was killed in Libya in 2011.

St. Peter will see you now

Death doesn't take a holiday when TCM arranges a night of movies about the pearly gates. Among the highlights: 1941's "Here Comes Mr. Jordan" (9:15 p.m.), which was later remade as "Heaven Can Wait," and 1943's "Cabin in the Sky" (1 a.m.), featuring a radiant Lena Horne.

Magic man

The late Tony Curtis was celebrated for his work in "The Sweet Smell of Success" and "The Defiant Ones," but he's equally hypnotic in the biopic "Houdini" (8:50 p.m., Retro), the 1953 film that captures both the torturous and fun-natured sides of magician Harry Houdini.
