New kid on the block

The letter of the day on "Sesame Street" is "F" as in friend, an appropriate choice since this special episode revolves around how Big Bird tries to bond with Julia, a Muppet with autism. Elmo may be a fine companion for youngsters, but when it comes to introducing kids to weighty issues, our yellow-beaked buddy remains the go-to teacher.

America comes of age

Producers Steven Ives and Amanda Pollak justify "The Great War's" six-hour running time by humanizing the World War I documentary with unforgettable characters, most notably Woodrow Wilson, whose religious beliefs, brilliance, ego and racism would shape history for decades to come. This powerful piece may not be as emotionally overwhelming as Ken Burns' work, but it still packs a punch.

Don't call me Shirley

"Angie Tribeca," the police sitcom that fires a joke every two seconds, may be guilty of cribbing from "Police Squad!" but until that cult classic mounts a return, this effort, led by Rashida Jones, is a welcome treat. In the new season, Jones and company track a genius killer, with more than few nods to "Silence of the Lambs." Chris Pine nearly salivates at the chance to play Hannibal Lecter.
