TV critic's picks: Wednesday

The British import "The Inbetweeners," and Elvis Costello

February 23, 2010 at 9:20PM

Stuck in the middle Fans of "Freaks & Geeks" and "Glee" should add the British import "The Inbetweeners" (8 p.m., BBC America) to their must-see list. The sitcom's raggedy nerds make our American misfits look like the homecoming court. Star Simon Bird is heartbreakingly hilarious as he manages to destroy both a school dance and a boating trip.

Man in the mirror "Spectacle: Elvis Costello With..." spotlights one of our favorite guests -- Costello himself (left). Interviewer Mary-Louise Parker does a so-so job in this rerun, but it's the music that takes center stage, as the artist rolls through two of my personal faves: "Brilliant Mistake" and "So Like Candy" (9 p.m. in St. Paul, midnight in Minneapolis, Sundance).

King of King Jeff Bridges, your Oscar is calling. The veteran actor will not only win because he's great in "Crazy Heart," but because he's been top-notch in a number of films, even ones that didn't earn him one of his five nominations. Near the top of that list: 1991's "The Fisher King" (9:55 p.m., Indieplex), in which he plays a radio-talk-show host near the end of his rope. The movie didn't go away empty-handed, though -- supporting actress Mercedes Ruehl took home an Academy Award.
