Five women in an SUV were injured when the driver rolled the vehicle while exiting Interstate 94 in Minneapolis over the weekend, police said Monday.

Initially, police said one of the passengers died, but "that information was not accurate," read an MPD statement issued shortly after 2 p.m. Monday. "No one died in the crash."

Police spokesman Aaron Rose summed up the mistake as "a rare miscommunication on several fronts. It is a relief to find out the victim is not deceased."

The rollover wreck occurred about 8:25 a.m. Sunday at the Dowling exit from eastbound I-94, police said. Officers arrived to find the SUV on its side, leaning against a telephone pole.

When officers arrived, they saw three women down outside the vehicle, another "partially ejected through the windshield" and a fifth trapped in the wreckage, police noted.

Three women were taken from the scene to a nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries, while two additional women were less seriously hurt and also hospitalized, according to police. The women ranged in age from 24 to 28, police said. Their identities have yet to be released.

A police report has categorized the crash with a 26-year-old woman behind the wheel as a case of criminal vehicular homicide, and police said in a follow-up statement Monday afternoon that "The MPD is investigating to determine if intoxication was a factor."

Police Sgt. Garrett Parten said no arrests have been made in connection with the crash.
