Eleanore Calvelage

Calvelage, Eleanore 105, passed on May 8, 2024 at the Emerald Crest care facility in Burnsville. Eleanore was the 4th of 5 children born to Josephine Johnson Hoie and Lars Monson, immigrants from Norway and Sweden. Eleanore spent most of her life in Minneapolis and was a member of Minnesota's 'Greatest Generation'. As a child who lived through the Great Depression - the time when she became the person she was, a woman with strong values of honor, integrity and tough virtue - she believed that no one owed you anything, but with hard work, determination and personal responsibility you could achieve anything. The early death of her mother and WWII ushered her into adulthood. During this time she was employed at Minneapolis-Honeywell where she worked on US military engineering and manufacturing projects while also keeping house for her father and younger brother. The War led to a whirlwind romance with the handsome Merchant Marine Robert (Bob) and in 1942 they were married. After the war they started their long awaited future and she returned to a more traditional job, including welcoming two children. Eventually, she was able to re-enter the workforce at a bank and began the upward climb into previously male-dominated positions to become one of the first female personal bankers at what is now Wells Fargo Bank, retiring in 1983 in order "to create opportunities for younger colleagues". Retirement was just the beginning of a new chapter in her life. She was able to travel and bowl in a league again. When Bob died in 1998, she moved to a senior community where there were activities she enjoyed like crafts and flower arranging, ladies' teas, HOA Happy Hours, playing 500 (card game), and shared meals with her 'gal pals'. She was renowned for her pies, doing projects while listening to opera (particularly Puccini's Madam Butterfly), her magnificently decorated Christmas trees, and watching the MN Vikings. She was a life-long member of Lake Nokomis Lutheran Church. She is survived by daughter, Sandy (John); son, Dean (Heide); niece, Corinne (Dick); granddaughter, Mandy (John and great grandchildren); plus many nieces, nephews, and their children. She was preceded in death by four infants, Bob her husband, all of her siblings, and many dear friends. A special thanks to the staff at Emerald Crest and Brighton Hospice for their care and spiritual support to Mom and our family. Mom had a very long and fulfilling life. She will be remembered for her kindness, honesty, and hard work. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her. How lucky are we to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard. There will be a private interment at Oak Hill Cemetery in Minneapolis.

David Ford Fitzgerald

David Ford Fitzgerald dies at 90, leaving a legacy of love and achievement

David Ford Fitzgerald died on March 23, 2024, at his home in Edina, Minnesota, surrounded by family. He was 90 years old.

David led an eventful life and was beloved by a large circle of friends and extended family to whom he was devoted. He was generous and outgoing, easily making friends wherever he went and bringing zest to any interaction. David enjoyed a stellar legal career, winning major product liability lawsuits against automobile, aviation, and other manufacturers. His work improved product safety and influenced legislation. Diagnosed with type 1 diabetes when he was in his 40s, he managed the disease in a determined, disciplined manner for nearly 50 years, maintaining good health and an active lifestyle. David also had a distinguished military career as a Navy pilot, which thrust him briefly into the news in the leadup to the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. He was a lifelong Catholic committed to serving others, and he gave his time and support to social justice causes. David overcame his early learning struggles with dyslexia and exceled in his studies. He was married to the love of his life, Helen Knoll Fitzgerald, for 63 years.

Born on June 27, 1933, in Gloucester, Massachusetts, David was the second of three sons of Gerald Arthur Fitzgerald and Regina Ford Fitzgerald. The family relocated numerous times, as his father's career as an agricultural scientist took them from Birds Eye frozen foods in Massachusetts to General Foods in New York, to Dover, Delaware, where he developed rations for the Army in World War II, and later to Iran. It was in Delaware, home to Dover Air Force Base, that David became enamored with aviation. He later joined the Navy, following in the footsteps of his mother, one of the first women to serve in the U.S. military, having been enlisted as a "Yeoman F" in Newport, R.I., during World War I.

David graduated from Georgetown University in 1955 with a bachelor's degree in history and government and completed training at the U.S. Navy Pre-Flight School in 1956. After serving on active duty from 1956-1959, he attended law school at Georgetown, where he was a member of the Law Review, graduating in 1962. He ranked tenth in his class of 104 students. His first legal job was as law clerk to Frank T. Gallagher, Associate Justice of the Minnesota Supreme Court.

During two weeks of active duty as a Navy reservist, he flew routine patrols over international waters from Boca Chica Naval Air Station in Key West, Florida. On August 30, 1962, while in their S-2F tracker aircraft 15 miles from Cuba, David and his crew were fired upon by two small vessels believed to be Cuban before returning safely to base. Cuban President Fidel Castro denied the attack occurred. The White House lodged an official protest, and President Kennedy ordered U.S. forces to return fire should another incident take place. Shortly after, David returned to Minnesota and resumed his duties under Judge Gallagher. He remained in the Naval reserve until 1977, flying more than 3,000 hours while on active duty and retiring at the rank of commander. David spoke in depth about his military service as part of the Veterans History Project at the Library of Congress, accessible here: loc.gov/item/afc2001001.124111/

In 1963, David joined the Minneapolis law firm that became Rider Bennett. He was the seventh attorney in what ultimately grew to a firm of 190 by the time he retired in 2004. David had the privilege of being a trial lawyer for over 40 years, all with the Rider firm he so dearly loved. He was an exceptionally talented lawyer in that he was successful and respected as both a defense and plaintiff's attorney. Most of his cases were referrals from other lawyers or past clients, a clear sign of the regard in which he was held.

Renowned for his consummate preparation and professional demeanor, both inside the courtroom and out, David worked tirelessly and compassionately on behalf of his clients. He lit up every courtroom he entered and loved the colleagues he worked with throughout his career. He was blessed to call many of them dear friends, even many of those who were his courtroom adversaries. Always modest and unassuming, David was very proud of the work he did as a trial lawyer and represented every client to the very best of his ability.

David was also caring, supportive, and generous mentor to dozens of lawyers, many of whom went on to distinguished careers as trial lawyers, law firm leaders and judges. His compassion, integrity, honesty, creativity, and dedication to all his clients was imbued in the many young lawyers who worked with him over his long and exceptional career. David was a warm, much loved, and truly special human being. The twinkle in his eye and his mischievous smile were ever present.

David handled many cases against major manufacturers such as General Motors, Pratt & Whitney, Volkswagen, and Chrysler. His victories lead to multiple improvements in their products for purposes of increased safety.

David was recognized and honored by his peers through his associations with the International Society of Barristers, the American Board of Trial Advocates, and the American College of Trial Lawyers, all of which are invitation-only organizations of elite trial lawyers, both defense and plaintiff. As a young law clerk in Washington in 1961, he was awarded a Citation for Meritorious Service by then-Secretary of Labor (and later Supreme Court Associate Justice) Arthur J. Goldberg. His colleagues note that David was named a "Super Lawyer" and one of the "Best Lawyers in America," which came as no surprise to anyone who practiced with him.

David had a rich spiritual life as a member of the Catholic Church, most recently at Christ the King Parish in Minneapolis. He attended silent retreats for 36 years at Demontreville Jesuit Retreat House outside St. Paul. He was a longtime member of the Catholic service and fellowship organization Serra International, and he served as a mentor for students at Cristo Rey Jesuit High School Twin Cities. David was deeply committed to the principles of integration, diversity, equity, and inclusion and served on the social justice committee of Christ the King Church.

David studied religion and theology throughout his lifetime, taking a course at Oxford University while in his 60s. He managed his diabetes aggressively, traveling to Austria to receive training in a method of precision glucose control, which greatly improved his ability to remain healthy with diabetes. In the last few months of his life, David’s diabetic team joked that he was probably the only 90-year-old still managing to use his insulin pump. His doctors were amazed at his ability to understand and manage his diabetic care, until his final weeks.

David is survived by his wife of 63 years, Helen Knoll Fitzgerald; his children John Fitzgerald; Molly Fitzgerald, and grandchildren Ellie and Lucas; and Kevin Fitzgerald (Lisa), and grandsons Jackson, Andrew, and Nicholas; and several dozen nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews. Always available and engaged, he was dearly loved by his wife and children and by his extended family. He was predeceased by his brothers Gerald and Richard.

A funeral mass will be celebrated on June 11, 2024, at the Church of Christ the King, 5029 Zenith Ave S., Minneapolis, MN 55410. Visitation at 10 a.m. will be followed by the service at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating in David’s memory to the following organizations:

Barbara Ann (Wildin) Hahn

Hahn, Barbara Ann (Wildin) aged 87, of Burnsville, passed away on May 7, 2024, at home surrounded by her family. A private family funeral service in Barbara's honor will be held. Barbara and her husband Dean will be laid to rest at Roselawn Cemetery. Barbara was born on May 25, 1936, to parents Lewis Wildin and Alysmae (Ramus) in Algona, Iowa, her father's hometown but soon moved to LuVerne, Iowa, her mother's hometown. She lived there, near her grandparents, William and Dora Ramus, and many of her aunts, uncles, and cousins. She attended school at the LuVerne Elementary School through 5th grade, her grandfather built the gymnasium there. Her family built a home in Algona, Iowa and they moved back there when Barbara was starting 6th grade. She attended school there through 10th grade, twirling a baton as a Majorette and being part of the band. For her junior and senior years in high school her family bought a beautiful farm in Owatonna, Minnesota and Barbara moved there for her last two years of high school. She was a Majorette, in the Usher Club, part of the band, and the homecoming queen! Barbara loved every city she lived in, the schools she attended, her teachers, and all her friends. Barbara went on to college at Minnesota State University, Mankato, where she also was a Majorette and where she met her husband Dean and they married in 1955. While Dean worked on his career Barbara became a mother and stayed home to raise her children, there would be 6 in all, so she was very busy. She lived in Mankato, Caledonia, then back to Mankato, then on to Burnsville all in Minnesota. They lived in 3 different houses in Burnsville, needing bigger ones as their family grew. After the children were grown, Barbara found line dancing and the rest is history! She performed with the ladies at fairs and events and Barbara taught line dancing for years. Her favorite thing in the world was the Minnesota State Fair. She bought a motorhome to camp there all 12 days each year and took in all the music concerts that the fair has to offer. She loved watching her grandson, Jayden, perform there with the band Ecuador Manta, it was her most cherished moment. Barbara also taught Sunday school and vacation bible school for her children and grandchildren. Her faith was a very important part of her life, and she attended christian women events and many other things. Barbara also went to country music festivals and other fairs and festivals. She dearly loved the Steele County Fair and the Dakota County Fair; she took all her children and grandchildren to both. Barbara went to every child and grandchild's sporting events, horse shows, music performances, and whatever else they did in life, she was there. Family get-togethers were the highlight of her life and we usually had them at least once a month. We almost saw each other daily because of all the events the grandchildren were in, Grandma was always there. Dean was very successful at his career becoming president of Hawkins Chemical Company and she loved traveling on business trips. They were huge basketball fans and when they were young attended the Minnesota Gophers games as often as possible. They watched all the Timberwolves, Gophers, Twins, and Vikings games. Life was all about family, music, dancing and sports with some travel thrown in. She was our Mom and she will be dearly missed but we know our parents will always be with us. Thank you for always making us and our children your priority. Barbara is survived by her children, James (Lori) Hahn, LuAnn Hahn, DeAnn (Doug) Anderson, John (Lynda) Hahn, Alyson Ann Hahn, and Heidi Ann (John) Hahn; grandchildren, Justin (Marette), Derek, Rylee, Rachael, and Jayden; and great- grandchild, Avery Rose. She was a paraprofessional in several Bloomington schools, including Penn Junior High and Kennedy and Jefferson high schools. After retirement she volunteered at Masonic Home for many years. She had been a member of Oak Grove Presbyterian Church since 1948. A voracious reader, she also loved the North Shore, crossword puzzles, and Leonard Cohen. But most of all she was a wonderful mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She always said she was directionally challenged, but to her family she was the North Star. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Phil; brothers, Bill and Roger Bloom; great-grandson, Silas Lamberger. She is survived by daughters, Terrie Hall and Nancy (Don) Lamberger; sons, Mark (Kelly) Hall and Chris Hall; grandchildren, Jesse (Kelly) Lamberger, Adam (Tiffany) Hall, Karli Thimsen, Alex (Bri) Hall, Miranda Thimsen; great grandchildren, Olivia and Stella Hall, Elijah Lamberger, and Cienna Hall; nieces, nephews, dear friends, and her beloved cats, Sam and Pippin. Her family would like to thank the wonderful staff of accentCare whose assistance allowed her to remain at home during her illness. In accordance with her wishes, no service will be held. Kathryn Mary (Meneely) Hansen

Kathryn Mary (Meneely) Hansen, 78, died in her home surrounded by loved ones after a bout with dementia. She is preceded in death by her parents Bob and Mary Meneely, brothers Tom and Pat, sister-in-law Marlys Hanson, and brother-in-law Charlie Pyle. She is survived by the love of her life for over 60 years, Daryl, whom she has absolutely adored since she first laid eyes on him at the age of 17; her only child, Amanda Carlson (Bill), along with three brilliant grandchildren Paige, Nat, and Jane. She leaves behind a boisterous crew of brothers and sisters, Jim Meneely (Wendy), Susie Meneely, Colleen Nicol (Brian), John Meneely (St. Linda), Mike Meneely (Donna), Molly Winkels (Brad), and surrogate brother Tommy Burns (Patti), along with 19 nieces and nephews, sister-in-law Shirley Pyle & close friends who cared deeply for her.

Koppy, as she was known, was incredibly generous. She wouldn’t hesitate to cook for you (her food was legendary), throw a party in your honor, or cheer you on no matter the reason. She was always in. She loved (and we mean LOVED) being a grandma. Paige, Nat, and Jane were her absolute joys in life. She showered them with treats and gifts, always managing to snag the perfect trinket sourced from various thrift shops around town. She was a staunch supporter of whatever they were up to, ready to rave about their accomplishments to anyone who would listen—including, raising her hand at a packed show to tell the audience that her grandchild was the most talented artist the world had ever seen, and certainly the most talented in the room. (We loved every minute of it.) She was always up for some fun. Traveling was her thing. She never met a burger she didn’t like. Her favorite word was the F-word. Espousing Daryl’s many talents was her specialty. The Y on Blaisdell was her weekly routine, although she was never known to break a sweat. She walked into her daughter’s house with the opening salvo, “What’s going on in this hellhole?” three times a week for over twenty-five years. She never missed a school function or a coffee outing with friends, always bringing her own watered-down version from home. She was the Head Gazoot in a family full of gazoots who knew how to enjoy life to the fullest, gather at the slightest provocation, dance to a good Beatles tune, play poker, or outtell a story. The latest fashions had nothing on her. Her sense of style was uniquely hers, influencing many, including her grandchildren. Daryl customized pieces she wore with pride. Her outfits were outrageously cool. By the time the 80s embraced the ear cuff, she was over it. Leg warmers? She wore them as sleeves. She liked what she liked and didn’t give a (insert your favorite expletive) what anyone else thought. She made the most out of every moment, carried on with the best of them, and existed in harmony with her beloved architect husband, spending their last few years dancing their way around Minneapolis and the surrounding suburbs dressed in their customary black. She was feisty, funny, and fearless—a “true character.” She will be missed by all who loved her and those whose lives she touched along the way. She left an indelible mark on the world, and for that we are forever grateful.

A Celebration of Life is in the works. Koppy loved a good party. Please reach out to amanda@amandacarlson.com if you’d like to be alerted to those details. We’ll let you know once things are organized. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your favorite charity or donate items to Value Village (ARC) or any thrift shop. That’s where Koppy always found the gold. Thank you for loving her, we sincerely appreciate it.

Wayne Otto Irene

Wayne Irene, 55, of Excelsior, Minnesota, passed away peacefully at home on April 5, 2024, of glioblastoma. As in life, his wife Lori was by his side. Wayne was born March 21, 1969, in Cambridge, Minnesota. He was baptized, confirmed, and married in the Lutheran faith. John Albert 'Jack' Johnston

Johnston, John Albert "Jack" 91, of Deephaven, MN, passed away on Sunday, May 12, at Methodist Hospital surrounded by family. He entered home hospice care in January 2022 and graduated in June 2022, blessing us with two bonus years together. Jack was born on November 9, 1932, to Dorrance and Eudora (Fox) Johnston in Warroad, MN. His father was a commercial fisherman and mink rancher, his mother was a nurse. He attended Warroad public schools and graduated from Warroad High School in 1950, then studied at the University of Minnesota, his father's alma mater, graduating in 1955 with a degree in Chemistry. Jack's first job was as a chemist at Rayette and it was at a monthly birthday lunch in the summer of 1956 that he met Rita Ross. Jack recalled that he knew that with the college degree also came, eventually, a draft notice, and he served in the U.S. Army Chemical Corps from 1956 to 1958. He proposed to Rita while he was in the service, and they were married on August 8, 1959. Jack and Rita settled in Deephaven in 1959, lived in three different homes there over the next 64 years, and had four children who grew up there: Louis (Susan Riley), Christopher, Jennifer, and Mark. Jack worked for Cargill from 1959 to 1998, managing the Grain Research Laboratory, working as a Grain Division Safety and Environmental Officer, and finally as a Corporate Research Department Facility manager. He worked as a laboratory and facility construction consultant for another ten years after retiring from Cargill. Jack was an enthusiastic volunteer, from YMCA activities, caring for the baseball fields at Bennett Park, counting collections and serving on the school board at St. Therese Parish, to joining in with fellow retirees from Cargill. He was always there to help kids, grandkids, nieces, and nephews with anything that needed fixing, painting, adjusting, or assembling. His love of music (especially Johann Strauss and Gilbert and Sullivan) was legendary, as he collected hundreds of records and CDs, played the piano, and attended dozens of concerts over the years. Jack and Rita and were passionate about travel, so they flew, drove, and cruised everywhere they could, touching every ocean and continent except Antarctica. He always enjoyed walking with Rita, and for 18 years their Jack Russell terrier, Caesar, joined them. Jack loved reading Civil War volumes, biographies, and the daily newspaper. Finally, Jack appreciated Saab automobiles more than anyone else. For over 50 years, starting in 1961, a parade of Saabs rolled through his garages, including every model from the 93 through the 95. Coupes, sedans, station wagons, turbos, convertibles, every car Saab produced. He drove them, ripped them apart, put them together, then drove them some more. All his children each owned at least one Saab over the years, thanks to dad. Jack was predeceased by his parents, his brothers (and their spouses) Albert (Linda) and David (Karin) Johnston, his granddaughter Mia Penny, his sister-in-law Carolyn Buntrock and his brother-in-law Frank Marvin. He is survived by his wife, children, his sister Marg Marvin, and his grandchildren: Grace Gudrun Gibbs (Max), Olivia Johnston Riley, John Johnston, Noah Penny, and Andrew Penny. Judith Kay Keough

Judith Kay Keough, age 81 of Bloomington, Minnesota. Our beloved Judy died on Saturday, May 11, 2024. Born to parents Earl and Sally Findsen, she grew up in Richfield, Minnesota, with her three sisters, and spent her adult life as a resident of Bloomington, MN. Judy attended St. Richard's Catholic School as a child and is a graduate of Academy of Holy Angels in Richfield, where she enjoyed performing piano and organ recitals. Family was the center of her life as she raised her children, eventually welcoming their spouses into the fold, and reveling in the arrival of grandchildren and the joyous gift of a great-grandson. Judy's love of entertaining and her talents for organizing and planning events lead her to a successful and storied career in the Twin Cities hospitality industry. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, she was the catering director for the University of Minnesota Alumni Association on the 50th floor of the IDS building in downtown Minneapolis. She was eventually lured "across the river" to the University Club of St. Paul, where she worked as Director of Catering for 23 years, again planning weddings, parties and major corporate events, but now in the beautiful mansion on Summit Avenue. After retirement, Judy and her husband, Don, used their time and talents to serve The Church of St. Edward in Bloomington. They considered it their mission to volunteer as funeral lunch hospitality coordinators, plan parish events large and small, and prepare and serve food for Loaves and Fishes in the community. One of Judy's greatest joys was meeting the love of her life, Don Keough. They were married for 46 years until his death in 2022. Together, they shared their love of food, wine and adventure to travel annually to Palm Desert, CA, and Maui, as well as summer getaways to Gull Lake in Brainerd, MN with their kids and grandkids. Judy and Don enjoyed spending time socializing with wonderful friends from St. Edward's at monthly Dinner Club gatherings. Judy could not put a book down and enjoyed settling in at night with a glass of wine while getting caught up on old movies. We will miss gathering at her home for family dinners, backyard BBQs and large holiday feasts, especially her beef tenderloin on Christmas Eve. We find comfort that her place in heaven was ready and that she rests in the peace of Christ and His eternal glory. Mass of Christian Burial at the Church of St. Edward, 9401 Nesbitt Ave. S., Bloomington, MN on Tuesday, May 21, 2024 at 11:00 am, with a visitation one hour prior.
