Janet Fay (Sommerland) Sabes

Sabes, Janet Fay (née Sommerland) age 83, of Wayzata, was born on February 17, 1941, and passed on May 15, 2024. She will be remembered for her devotion, kindness, and love as a wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, daughter, sister, and friend throughout her entire life. Anyone lucky enough to know Janet knew they were with someone special. She was beautiful and intelligent, and she possessed strength and kindness that were as uncommon as unconditional. Janet grew up in South Minneapolis, attending Roosevelt High School, where she described herself as "pretty normal." However, that's not what anyone else saw; they saw someone extraordinary. So, too, did her soon-to-be boyfriend and then-husband, Bob Sabes, when she caught his eye at the Porky's Drive-In on Lake Street. Janet attended the University of Minnesota, where she found Bob waiting outside her classroom, seeking his first date. Janet and Bob married on April 15, 1966, and soon had three sons, Jon, Steven, and Ross. While raising her family, Janet embraced and hosted her extended family, welcoming everyone with love and kindness. Athletic and strong, she started playing tennis when she wasn't busy raising her boys or helping Bob with his entrepreneurial ventures. She won the over-35 Minnesota State Doubles Championship in 1982 and the over-45 National Doubles Championship in 1987. Later, when her boys had grown up, she decided to learn how to play golf, quickly becoming one of her age's top local women's golfers. Janet described her life as fulfilled and incredible, always including an ode to Dr. Seuss's "Oh the Places You'll Go!", referencing the five years she and Bob spent traveling the globe in their floating condominium on "The World" and spending time at their homes in Wayzata, Palm Springs, and Las Vegas. She always expressed feelings of love, kindness, and gratitude to the individuals who touched her life, going out of her way to make everyone she touched feel special because she believed they were. However, the capstone of Janet's life was her family and grandchildren, which she valued above all else. She will be dearly missed by all those who knew and survive her. May she rest in peace for eternity. Janet is survived by her husband, Bob; sons Jon (Kristine), Steven (Maggie O'Gara), and Ross (Dawn); grandchildren, Jackson, Brooke, Lauren, Hanah, Morgan, Joe, Natalie, and Kelsey Sherer; sister-in-law, Raliegh Boukather; and an extended network of family and friends, all of whom will miss the bright joy and happiness she brought into their lives. She is preceded in death by her parents, Gordon and Mabel Sommerland; sisters, Karen Bush and Sandra; brother, Gary; parents-in-law, Moe and Esther Sabes; and an extended network of family and friends she loved and cared for. Funeral service 1:00 pm SUNDAY, May 19th at ADATH JESHURUN CONGREGATION, 10500 Hillside Lane West, Minnetonka. SHIVA 7:00 pm Sunday at Adath Jeshurun Congregation.
