Boros, Karen Karen Boros had more than 15 minutes of fame during her television and radio career. Women's faces were rare in TV news, but she crashed the glass ceiling and led the way for other women by covering politics for WCCO TV News during the 70s and 80s on a beat dominated by men. She was tough, funny and diligent. Karen was respected by the politicians she covered, admired by her peers and colleagues, and loved by her many friends. She graduated from the University of Illinois with a marketing degree and turned what she learned there into decades of career challenges. She began as a copywriter for Sears in Chicago, followed by a stint at the Chicago Daily News, and when she and her late doctor husband, Steve Boros, moved to Minnesota, she worked a grueling schedule for Twin Cities suburban Newspapers. It was a leap to WCCO TV, first as a researcher and then as an on air talent. Many times Karen would latch on to a story others might overlook. One of those stories found her ducking a bullet when a protest turned ugly. CBS News recognized her grit and talent and brought her to Chicago. When the Chicago Bureau folded, she returned to Minnesota for a job at Minnesota Public Radio where she once again found herself in the basement of the State Capitol. As a girl she was told she could only be a teacher or a nurse, professions she deliberately avoided. So she was astonished to find that her most satisfying job wasn't in the spotlight but in the classroom. She passed on what she'd learned to hundreds of Broadcast Journalism students at the University of St. Thomas. She died Sunday, September 10, after a short battle with cancer. Her family and close friends got to say goodbye. She is survived by sisters Barbara Lierson, Colorado; Ruth Ann Hentschke, Missouri, nephews Paul and Kurt Hentschke, and her beloved bulldog, Sweetie. Her funeral will be held at the Lakewood Cemetery Chapel, Minneapolis, on Thursday, September 21, 9am viewing, 10am service.
