No charges against W. Wis. resident who grabbed gun, shot violent intruder

A western Wisconsin man was rousted from bed by a banging at the door just hours into the new year, prompting him to grab his handgun and shoot the violent intruder, authorities said.

"Charges are not expected to be filed" against the resident, Justin D. Schill, 33, of Centuria, according to a statement Friday from Polk County Sheriff Peter M. Johnson.

The intruder, Derek W. Amoroso, 25, also of Centuria, was hospitalized at Regions Hospital in St. Paul with a "gunshot wound to the leg/groin area," Johnson added. Amoroso was last reported in stable condition.

Public records show that both men live in the same block of 4th Street, but authorities have not said whether they knew each other before Thursday's predawn incident.
