A man who reportedly rammed his wife's car with his own van in a Target parking lot in the north metro Saturday night ended up in a rollover accident on Interstate 694 while allegedly trying to outrun police.

A pursuing Brooklyn Park police officer was calling for assistance and a police helicopter around 8:30 p.m. Saturday when the fleeing driver lost control of his van. The chase started on Hwy. 81 and then reached speeds of 80 miles per hour when the vehicles turned onto the eastbound interstate.

"Losing him!" the pursuing officer exclaimed on the radio. "694-Brooklyn Boulevard. Wrecked! Wrecked!"

The van rolled four times into the ditch and did not strike any other vehicles, said Brooklyn Park Sgt. Brice Sand. The driver was hospitalized but not seriously injured. Sand declined to identify the suspect, who was arrested on suspicion of second-degree assault and fleeing a motor vehicle accident.

Two lanes of eastbound 694 were briefly closed following the accident.
