Dickcissels really are everywhere

85 counties down, two to go

Dickcissels are having a banner year here. I wrote a few days ago about their widespread presence in Minnesota and Wisconsin this year. As of early this past week that species has been found in 85 of Minnesota's 87 counties, and in all 72 counties in Wisconsin. The birds have yet to be found in Roseau and Cook counties. This species is erratic in its distributon behavior, but this is an exceptional year under any description. On a recent trip west we found the birds in South Dakota, Nebraska, and Wyoming, incidentally, without trying. Below, a Dickcissel in a hay field, a good place to look for them.

As an eviction crisis has seemed increasingly likely this summer, everyone in the housing market has made the same plea to Washington: Send money — lots of it — that would keep renters in their homes and landlords afloat.
