Rene Sanchez

He joined the Star Tribune in 2004 as a regional reporter and was later named its Sunday editor. He has subsequently overseen the Metro, Business and Sports departments as well as special reporting projects and investigative work. He helped lead the Star Tribune's investigation of child deaths at daycare facilities in Minnesota that earned the 2013 Pulitzer Prize for local reporting. Sanchez's journalism career began in New Orleans at The Times-Picayune, where he reported on sports and local news. He then spent 17 years as a local and national reporter for The Washington Post. In his last six years at the Post, he was based in Los Angeles, covering California and the American West. A New Orleans native, Sanchez earned his bachelor's degree in journalism from Loyola University.

Terry Sauer

Sauer supervises news content and distribution for StarTribune.com. Previously, he was the newspaper's Page One editor. He's a graduate of the University of North Dakota.

Liz Sawyer

Sawyer graduated from Syracuse University's Newhouse School of Public Communications with a degree in newspaper and online journalism. She worships her alma mater's college hoops team and thinks an orange is, in fact, a suitable mascot.

Hannah Sayle

A native of Memphis, Tennessee, Sayle moved to Minneapolis in 2013, when she was named managing editor of City Pages. She was previously a news reporter and food writer for Memphis Flyer and Memphis magazine. In 2019, Sayle joined the Star Tribune as a digital editor in the features department. She has won awards for her music and food criticism from the Society of Professional Journalists.

Lee Schafer

Schafer grew up on a southwest Minnesota cattle farm and studied history and economics at Macalester College. He received his masters degree from Northwestern University and worked as a writer and editor for a regional business monthly before returning to business. His work included investment banking but he had the most fun advising CEOs on growth strategy. He lives in St. Paul with his wife Tanya Bell, a real estate development consultant and civic leader, and they have three adult daughters. He's also been active as a volunteer, including for Twin Cities Habitat for Humanity, Neighborhood House and Urban Homeworks.

A Wisconsin native, Schmitt lives in Minneapolis with her husband. She graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in journalism, and also attended the U's law school for one year (and one day). She has two SND awards.

Chip Scoggins

Chip Scoggins is a sports columnist and enterprise writer for the Star Tribune. A graduate of the University of Missouri journalism school, Scoggins worked at newspapers in Texas, Connecticut, North Carolina and Chicago before joining the Star Tribune in 2000. He has been named Minnesota's Sportswriter of the Year four times by the National Sports Media Association.

Chris Serres

Serres writes about issues affecting society's most vulnerable populations, including the poor, elderly, mentally ill and people with cognitive and physical disabilities. He is married and has two children, Dominic, 12, and Emmanuelle, 10. He has been a newspaper reporter for 20 years.
