Previous to being at the Star Tribune Rivers worked at the Lansing (Michigan) State Journal, first as a copy editor, then as the assistant sports editor and finally as the sports editor for three years. He also worked at the Winona Daily News, the Ottumwa (Iowa) Courier and the Decatur (Illinois) Herald & Review. A native of Winona, RIvers is a Winona Cotter High School and St. Mary's (Winona) University graduate.

A proud University of Illinois alumnus, after jobs in Illinois and upstate New York in business and metro news as well as features, Roberts moved to Apple Valley at the end of 2014 with her journalist husband and their two sons and has enjoyed exploring Minnesota, from the giant ball of twine to Lake Pepin, Twin Cities landmarks, town baseball and the Twins. Before moving to Minnesota, he worked for daily newspapers in Michigan, Montana, Illinois and New York. His longest stint was nearly 20 years at the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle in New York. His wife, Cathy Roberts, is a team leader in business at the Star Tribune.

Since joining the Star Tribune in 2009, he has covered the Twin Cities metro area, the city of Minneapolis, the state Legislature and Congress. A native of New York City, Roper lives in south Minneapolis. He is interested in the hidden systems that make urban life possible, as well as Minneapolis history. Roper is a graduate of the George Washington University and was named "Young Journalist of the Year" by the Society of Professional Journalists' Minnesota chapter in 2013. In his spare time, he is an amateur woodworker who enjoys learning new furniture-making skills.
