Opening Saturday: The Minnesota Center for Book Arts will award its second MCBA Prize during a gala Saturday to one of five finalists chosen from "The Best New Artists' Books in the World." The stats are impressive: More than 150 artists from 22 nations on all seven continents competed for the prize. Their entries can be seen in an online gallery at mnbookarts.org/mcbaprize. The finalists are Sarah Bryant of Aurora, N.Y.; Julie Chen of Berkeley, Calif.; Brad Freeman of Chicago; Peter Malutzki of Flörsheim am Main, Germany, and Ines von Ketelhodt, also of Flörsheim am Main, who produced "Die bessere Hälfte," the composite image shown here. The sold-out award party is the centerpiece of a weekend "Book Art Biennial" featuring discussions, workshops and lectures by national experts in the field. Several continuing exhibitions will present related book-themed art including "Pacing the Page" (through Sept. 4), "Fine & Dirty: Contemporary Letterpress Art" (through Oct. 16) and "Down Under Up Here" (through Sept. 18).
