A woman was killed and four people injured in a rear-end collision during a traffic backup Saturday night in rural St. Louis County, authorities said.

Cathy Marjorie Johnson, 61, of Tower, Minn., died just after 8 p.m. in the crash on Hwy. 169 north of Virginia, Minn.

She was a passenger in a Chevrolet Impala driven by David Kevin Medicine, 38, of Virginia that collided with a Dodge Ram pickup truck.

Medicine and a second passenger — a 45-year-old woman — suffered non-life-threatening injuries and were treated at Essentia Health-Virginia.

The State Patrol said Medicine had been drinking before the collision.

The two men in the pickup — a 56-year-old from Ely man and a 58-year-old from Embarrass — were also treated at the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. A 14-year-old passenger was not injured.

Authorities listed road conditions at the time as "wet." The St. Louis County Sheriff, Tower EMS, Virginia Fire and EMS, and Britt Fire responded to the crash.
