University of Minnesota and other college students throughout the metro area plan to participate in the National Day of Prayer. They are scheduled to gather at the Mariucci Hockey Arena on Thursday to mark the annual event.

In addition to praying for the Twin Cities, the 7 p.m. event will feature worship led by a band representing six Twin Cities churches, a performance from Christian rock band Leeland and appearances by religious leaders.

Started in 1952 by joint resolution of the United States Congress, the National Day of Prayer is an annual observance on the first Thursday of May. Organizers say its purpose is to communicate the need for personal repentance and prayer while offering support for the nation's leaders.

The 60th Annual National Day of Prayer's theme is "A Mighty Fortress is Our God" and is based on the verse from Psalm 91:2 which states: "I will say to the Lord, my refuge and my fortress, my God in whom I trust."

The most visible gathering has been held historically at the nation's Capitol in Washington. In 2010, approximately 40,000 events were held nationwide, according to the National Day or Prayer website.

Local volunteers and coordinators held a variety of activities ranging from prayer breakfasts, Bible reading marathons, concerts of prayer, rallies, church prayer vigils, student flagpole gatherings and observances held in sports stadiums. For more information, check out www.unitetwincities.com.
