Jerry Zgoda missed the entire Kevin Garnett era, but he's back covering the Timberwolves after working the beat for their first four seasons two decades ago. In between, he covered a bit of everything: Gopher men's and women's basketball and NCAA athletics, golf, outdoor recreation, sports media and a little Vikings and Twins.

Kahn in Vegas: On Love, Rubio and other matters

Well, it didn't quite rank up there with his unforgettable interview with Chris Webber at the Las Vegas Summer League two years ago, but David Kahn did do another in-game interview with NBA TV Sunday night with Greg Anthony and Vince Cellini during his team's Vegas finale.

Here's some of what he said about Kevin Love's recent comments and the play of Derrick Williams and Wes Johnson in Vegas:

On Love's comments on his growing impatience with Kahn and Glen Taylor to build a winner in Minnesota: "Well, he's not the only one who wants to do that. I think that sometimes Kevin thinks he's a lone voice in the wilderness when he talks about things like that. We're all deeply motivated next year to make the playoffs.

"He knew exactly before free agency started who we were looking at and he was in agreement with everything. I think there's a fine line. I think it's important for players of Kevin's caliber to be consulted and be involved, but I think you can sometimes go overboard in giving them too much say-so and control. I just spoke to Ricky Rubio two days ago because I think Ricky as well is an important part of our future."

On Rubio's rehab: "He told me two days ago he's feeling great and he thinks he can run right now, but the doctors won't let him. When he had his last checkup in Vail June 21, the doctor felt he was ahead of schedule. We go back to Vail the start of August and based on what Ricky told me, I think things are going great."

Kahn said three different members of the team's medical staff have gone to Barcelona in shifts to be with Rubio while he rehabilitates that knee. Rubio will return to Spain after that next checkup in Colorado and a Wolves employee will accompany him then, too, so that somebody will be with him every day in Spain.

"I never want to look back in a couple months and say, `Gosh, if we only had done this he would have been ready sooner," Kahn said.

On the Wolves' week in Vegas, where they went 4-1: "It has been a good week for us. Derrick's had a good. We've been able to put him in situatiosn where he has been the featured player in our offense, challenged him to do things more aggressively. And Wes Johnson has had a really good week, a bounce-back week. He had a really rough year last year for us and this week has been been instrumental hopefully in him regaining his confidence."

When asked by Anthony about D-Williams, he said, "Even before you played, there were never small forwards and power forwards. There were just forwards, right? I think Derrick is a forward. A smart coach, an accomplished coach like Rick can put him in spots where he can succeed from an offensive standpoint. Now from a defensive standpoint, Derrick's going to figure out. That's more more of the issue, guarding 3s and some of the 4s frankly are a little too big for him. So he's kind of in that in between.

"So Derrick's going to have to work very diligently on that and understand that no matter who he's matched up with, there will be different looks every night. That will be the challenge. I think offensively, he doesn't have anything to worry about. He has that rare combination of some physicality and some strength and he can really go outside and shoot the ball."
