Vikings vice president of player personnel Rick Spielman said today that he has not talked to Brad Childress since the coach visited with quarterback Brett Favre on Monday in Hattiesburg, Miss.

As everyone knows, Favre remains undecided about whether he will play in 2010 and obviously Childress needs to get an idea fairly soon of what will happen. "Brad will address the media when the time comes," Spielman said following a Bloomington Chamber of Commerce luncheon that the Vikings hosted at Winter Park.

Asked about how interesting the situation is with Favre, Spielman said: "It's a pretty unique situation but I also think in this situation the player is a unique player, too. I don't think there's too many players his age that have produced the way he's produced. I leave all that to Brad and Brett to workout. But based off last year -- what he was able to do at the age he was able to do it at -- it's something that is pretty unique."

Spielman expressed confidence in backup quarterbacks Tarvaris Jackson, Sage Rosenfels and Joe Webb and feels Jackson and Rosenfels will benefit from learning behind Favre.

"Whether it's Sage or Tarvaris to sit there and see what Brett was able to accomplish and his approach to the game and how he played and what he sees ...," Spielman said. "I don't know if anyone knows the West Coast system better than Brett Favre. Not only because he knows it inside out from a playbook standpoint, but he's actually been behind that pocket and had to make those reads and make those quick decisions. I'm sure all that knowledge and expertise that he has was absorbed by our backup quarterbacks."

A story on the Star Tribune website will be posted this evening with Spielman's complete comments on the Favre situation.

On another note, Spielman was asked if negotiations would be heating up with the Vikings' draft picks in the coming days. Minnesota has signed two of its eight picks and has yet to reach deals with second-rounders Chris Cook (cornerback) and Toby Gerhart (running back).

"Those will heat up probably even more next week when we get closer to training camp," Spielman said. "Most of the deals that we do happen a day or two before training camp starts." (The Vikings will report on July 29).

Asked if not having a first-round pick made things easier, Spielman said: "I wouldn't say it's a lot easier but it's less complicated than when you're picking in the top 10 to try to get deals done. Most of those end up being slotted in some way, shape or form."
