Day@camp: Daily dispatch from Mankato

Here's the situation

The Vikings worked on live goal-line and red-zone situations during Monday night's practice. The defense wasn't allowed to tackle the quarterback or a running back behind the scrimmage, but everything else was fair game from the 2- and 20-yard lines. Running back Adrian Peterson did not participate in goal-line drills but was involved in the red-zone situation. Defensive tackles Linval Joseph, Sharrif Floyd and Tom Johnson clogged the middle in the defense's goal-line package.

Just for kicks

Vikings kicker Blair Walsh got his first opportunity to participate in the team's field goal unit. He went 6-for-7, with his only miss from 44 yards. Punter Jeff Locke remained his holder.

From the Podium

The Vikings had their first of three night practices Monday. Coach Mike Zimmer said he scheduled training camp this way to change the schedule a bit for the players. He also said it benefits the fans that want to show up for a practice without missing work.

"Typically when you go to a night practice the tempo picks up a little bit, although I feel really good about the tempo of our practices," Zimmer said. "… It is good to go in, get work done, go fast, and then get out. We don't make it shorter, but we make it seem like it is shorter, hopefully."

Camp Chatter

"He won't get many [repetitions] in the preseason, and he won't get any in the goal-line tonight. I don't need to see him."
