Vikings needs to address on Day 3

Posted by: Master Tesfatsion Updated: May 10, 2014 - 10:00 AM

Two days down, one to go.

Here’s a refresher of who the Vikings have selected so far and what needs they’ve addressed.

Well, they’ve already addressed some of their biggest needs so far. The Vikings added a linebacker with UCLA’s Anthony Barr and moved back up into the first round to select Louisville quarterback Teddy Bridgewater. That was two of the biggest areas they needed to address in the draft.

Then the Vikings stayed true to their board and selected Crichton, who Vikings general manager Rick Spielman said will give them flexibility all over the defensive line. It seems almost similar to when the Vikings selected defensive end Everson Griffen in 2011. He started just one game in four years but could play any position on the line.

Their final pick on Day 2 was Georgia Southern running back Jerick McKinnon, who Spielman viewed as a third down change-of-pace back to Adrian Peterson and Matt Asiata.

So, what other areas do they have to address with two fifth rounders, a sixth and a seventh on Saturday?

Secondary help should be main priority at this point. The Vikings added cornerbacks Captain Munnerlyn and Derek Cox in free agency to the 31st ranked secondary last season. They should look to add a corner, safety or possibly both if there’s an opportunity to upgrade or add depth to the position. Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer spent a lot of time with the defensive backs teaching them technique. If they don’t pick a cornerback or safety, which would be difficult to see, Zimmer must feel comfortable with what’s on the roster.

Now that running back has been addressed, the Vikings should look to add a guard in Day 3. There was a run of guards in the second round when the Vikings didn’t have a pick, but they’ll need to look at depth and the future. They re-signed 30-year-old guard Charlie Johnson to a two-year deal and Brandon Fusco will be a free agent next year. While they have Jeff Baca and signed Vladmir Ducasse, they should look to add one more guy to the mix.

After that, the Vikings could be looking at adding another tight end. Outside of Kyle Rudolph, they have Allen Reisner, Chase Ford and Rhett Ellison. Also, Rudolph is entering a contract year and coming off a broken foot that placed him on injured reserve last season. Adding depth at this position wouldn’t hurt just in case something happens to Rudolph again or one of those three guys don’t develop into the backup tight end offensive coordinator Norv Turner wants.
