John Carlson out; Vikings announce 24-hour no-service fee ticket deal

Posted by: under Vikings, Bears, Leslie Frazier, Adrian Peterson, Antoine Winfield, Jared Allen, Leslie Frazier Updated: October 23, 2012 - 5:52 PM

Running back Adrian Peterson and tight end John Carlson were the only two Vikings who didn’t practice at all Tuesday afternoon.

Others who were limited in the Vikings’ lone practice this week were Jared Allen (groin), Matt Kalil (back), Antoine Winfield (knee), Harrison Smith and Mistral Raymond (ankle).

Peterson is still dealing with some lingering soreness in his left ankle. But that clearly didn’t affect him against Arizona as he ran for 153 yards and scored a first-quarter touchdown, delivering his best effort of the season so far.

Peterson expects to be a full-go by kickoff Thursday night against Tampa Bay.

Carlson, however, will not play against the Bucs, still yet to be cleared after suffering a concussion in the fourth quarter of Sunday’s win over Arizona.

This isn’t Carlson’s first concussion-related setback either. While with Seattle, he was knocked unconscious during a playoff game in Chicago in January 2011, falling awkwardly after he tried to leap over Bears safety Danieal Manning.

With the NFL’s heightened concerns with concussions, Carlson’s health will be worth keeping an eye on.

On Thursday, coach Leslie Frazier said there were no worries that Carlson’s current head injury would have major long-term ramifications.

“None of the doctors have indicated to me that this is something we have to be concerned about long-term,” Frazier said. "There will be a lot more discussions. Because he hasn't been cleared yet. But at this point, no, [there's] not a concern about his long-term future. ... John's a very level-headed guy. He understands where he is in respect to his history with concussions. And our major concern is his health. He knows that. And we're going to do all we can to help him and help our team as well and assist him in recovering from this concussion. He's not down. He has a good frame of mind. He's been through this before."

Back to basics

Jared Allen was thrilled with the defensive effort Sunday with the Vikings producing seven sacks and two takeaways, including Harrison Smith’s 31-yard interception return for a score. But Allen emphasized that the Vikings need to strive for greater consistency and must clean up the tackling woes that showed up out of nowhere against Arizona.

Cardinals back LaRod Stephens-Howling rushed for 104 yards and added 45 receiving, proving quite slippery and hard to wrap up. Still, Allen said, the Vikings should have done a better job.

“Runs they spouted off for 10 yards should have been a 2-yard loss,” he said. “You correct those things. And tackling is a mentality. Look, we have good tacklers on this team. We’ve proved that.”
