La Velle E. Neal III has covered baseball for the Star Tribune since 1998 (the post-Knoblauch era). Born and raised in Chicago, he grew up following the White Sox and hating the Cubs. He attended both the University of Illinois and Illinois-Chicago and began his baseball writing career at the Kansas City Star. He can be heard occasionally on KFAN radio, lending his great baseball mind to Paul Allen and other hosts. Mark Rosen borrows him occasionally for WCCO-TV.

Super late update from the winter meetings

The San Francisco Chronicle reports that the Twins are one of three teams interested in free agent catcher Kurt Suzuki. So they appear to be very interested in bringing along Josmil Pinto slowly next season while relying on Ryan Doumit and insert-free-agent-here behind the plate.

The Twins have struck out in attempts to sign A,J. Pierzynski and Jarrod Saltalamacchia and have kicked the tires on J.P. Arencibia (who's headed to Texas), John Buck (free agent) and Suzuki (free agent).

No word on Mike Pelfrey or Bronson Arroyo, but I expect that the Twins had contact with both of them on Wednesday night. Thursday should be interesting, as we'll find out what happened in the suites late Wednesday night.

The talk of the night was about this incident and who could have been involved.
