La Velle E. Neal III has covered baseball for the Star Tribune since 1998 (the post-Knoblauch era). Born and raised in Chicago, he grew up following the White Sox and hating the Cubs. He attended both the University of Illinois and Illinois-Chicago and began his baseball writing career at the Kansas City Star. He can be heard occasionally on KFAN radio, lending his great baseball mind to Paul Allen and other hosts. Mark Rosen borrows him occasionally for WCCO-TV.

Three Twins postgame thoughts from LEN3: On roster moves made, and not made

Here are three thoughts following the Twins loss to Cleveland:

ROSTER MOVE I: The Twins apparently want to see what Matt Guerrier can bring to the team. He was a popular teammate during his first stint with the Twins, and I'm sure being a chemistry guy is another reason the Twins want to give him a shot. But can he still be effective? He gave up home runs in each of his last two outings for Rochester, but said this afternoon that his arm feels great and he was touching 91-92 on the radar gun. The key will be command, since he's not overpowering. He could have walked and looked for another club if he had not been called up by tomorrow.

ROSTER MOVE II: The Twins were pretty bummed out about Arcia showing up to Rochester's game not 100 percent. They had counted on him being ready so he can take over in the outfield. If you didn't notice, the Twins started Eduardo Escobar in left field on Wednesday after watching Chris Herrmann's batting average drop to .125. Who knows how many days Arcia will need before he's ready to play now?. That was a setback for the Twins, who  could use all the bats they can find as they prepare to face Justin Verlander and Max Scherzer this weekend.

ROSTER MOVE III: Next up on the transaction list is Aaron Hicks, who faced live pitching on Wednesday. In a perfect world, Hicks would probably go to Rochester for a few days to made sure he's ready - and to try to find his stroke - before returning to the Twins. Now they might need him right away because they are low on outfielders (Gardy wasn't pleased with Sam Fuld's at-bat in the ninth inning on Wednesday and might be ready to give him a break too). The Twins also want to get down to 12 pitchers - that's worth watching. And Joe Mauer is going to test his back again on Thursday. I maintain that if he can't play by Friday they should DL him.
