Duensing the latest Twins player to go down

The Twins are again seeking reinforcements after Brian Duensing suffered a strained oblique muscle in a loss to the Angels.

ANAHEIM, CALIF. — Indications are that the Twins will call up righthanders Liam Hendriks and Kyle Waldrop and utility man Brian Dinkleman to add some healthy bodies to a Twins club that continues to be hammered by injuries.

Hendriks is expected to start Tuesday vs. the White Sox. He is 4-4 with a 4.56 ERA in nine starts at Class AAA Rochester after being promoted from Class AA New Britain.

Waldrop has a 3.92 ERA in 55 appearances with the Red Wings and has pitched well late in the season.

Dinkleman is hitting .243 with three homers and 39 RBI for Rochester. He was called up briefly earlier this season.

Twins manager Ron Gardenhire would not confirm the moves, saying that decisions still need to be made and players involved haven't been notified.

"I know people are blogging stuff and tweeting stuff," Gardenhire said. "It's not official until we announce it."

The Twins continue to battle injuries, the latest to lefthander Brian Duensing during a 10-6 loss to the Angels on Saturday. He left in the second inning because of a right oblique strain.

Duensing said he felt a pull during a couple of warmup pitches before the game but figured it would go away. It didn't. He hopes that it's a day-to-day injury, but oblique strains can be pesky.

"I started compensating," Duensing said. "That's when [catcher Rene Rivera] said, 'That's enough.' "

Four of the Twins' five original starting pitchers this season are now injured; Scott Baker, Nick Blackburn and Francisco Liriano are on the disabled list. "It's crazy," Gardenhire said. "I've never seen anything like it."

With Class AAA Rochester's season ending Monday, the day the Twins and White Sox play a doubleheader, more pitchers were expected to be called up. Hendriks, Waldrop and Dinkleman are not on the 40-man roster, so space must be cleared for them.

Duensing served up a grand slam to Mark Trumbo in the first inning on an 0-2 pitch that should have been in the dirt and not over the plate.

Given a four-run lead, Jered Weaver couldn't hold it, but the Angels ace still earned his 16th victory of the year. The Twins scored six runs off Weaver, but Vernon Wells gave Los Angeles the lead for good with a fifth-inning solo homer off Phil Dumatrait.

Down to one man

Backup catcher Drew Butera was the Twins' only fully healthy bench player Saturday.

Justin Morneau is still out because of mild concussion symptoms, but he is making progress. There still is no timetable on the slugger's return.

Joe Mauer told trainer Rick McWane he felt as bad as he did Friday. So the catcher stayed at the hotel dealing with what McWane described as "general congestion" and fluid in one of his ears.

Outfielder Jason Repko came to the park with an upset stomach but stayed in case he was needed.

Etc.

• Liriano was examined by specialist Dr. Lewis Yocum, who agreed with the Twins that Liriano has a posterior shoulder strain. Liriano said he hopes to begin throwing this week and would like to pitch in a couple of games before the season is over.

• Baker (elbow) threw in the bullpen with no problems and will throw again Tuesday.

• Outfielder Denard Span, after spending more than a week at home in Florida in an attempt to clear up migraine symptoms, returned to Target Field on Saturday and worked out. The Twins would like for him to play before the season ends.
