Minnesota fishing report

  • Updated: May 20, 2014 - 9:57 PM

Detroit Lakes area: Water temperatures have remained a bit cool, but anglers still are catching walleyes at 5 to 12 feet, using jigs and shiners on Sallie, Melissa, or Little Detroit lakes. Panfish action is best on shallow bays where there is plenty of weed cover, such as Sallie, Melissa, and Pelican lakes.

Ely area: According to Babe’s Bait and Tackle shop in Ely, walleyes are active around river mouths and on area lakes such as Fall and White Iron, using jigs. Northerns are hitting on sucker minnows along weed beds and rocky points.

Grand Rapids area: Water temperatures still are a bit cooler than normal on most area lakes, so walleye action is generally more active at shallow depths during the evenings and deeper depths during the daytime. Bowstring and Pokegama have produced the best walleye action so far.

Lake Waconia: Anglers are catching some walleyes during the evenings by using crankbaits or slip bobbers and leeches at about 3-8 feet on parts of the lake, such as Harm’s Point, the Carp Trap, and the Claybanks area. Sunfish are being caught at 6 to 10 feet on Waconia Bay.

Lake of the Woods: Anglers are catching plenty of nice-sized walleyes near Pine Island, Morris Point gap, Lighthouse gap, and 4-Mile Bay in about 4-17 feet, using a jig. At the Northwest Angle, walleye action also is productive at shallow depths near shoreline structures.

Leech Lake area: Cedar Point has produced good walleye action at about 10 feet. Anglers also are catching nice walleyes near the shoreline by Joe’s Landing up to Little Hardwoods at shallow depths. Pine Point, Goose Island, and the Meadows are also good walleye spots at 6-8 feet.
