Waltiea Rolle, a center picked No. 36 overall in the WNBA draft, will finish her degree and then play in Europe.

North Carolina center Waltiea Rolle, taken by the Minnesota Lynx with the 36th and final pick in Monday’s WNBA draft, will not join the team until 2014.

Rolle, from the Bahamas, told a Bahamas news outlet she will work on completing her degree in sports administration at North Carolina this summer. Then she will play in Europe starting next fall, with an eye toward reporting to the Lynx the following season.

Rolle, who became the first player from the Bahamas to be taken in a WNBA draft, averaged 12.1 points, 6.6 rebounds and 2.5 blocks per game as a senior.

“I really just want to be able to finish school and get my degree first,” Rolle told tribune242.com. “I will go to Europe in October to play for about six months before I come back and play in the WNBA.”

Needing another post player for training camp, the Lynx signed center Shawnice “Pepper’’ Wilson, who recently finished her career at the University of Miami. The 6-6 Wilson averaged career highs in points (10.0) and rebounds (8.6) as a senior. She finished fourth in the Atlantic Coast Conference in free throw percentage (.798), fifth in rebounding and seventh in field goal percentage (.519).
