MIAC baseball champion St. John's, seeded fifth, and No. 4 seed and Upper Midwest champion St. Scholastica will meet Wednesday in Game 1 of the opening round of the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional at Wisconsin-La Crosse.

The Midwest tournament, one of eight Division III regionals to be contested in double-elimination play Wednesday through Sunday, also includes host and 2015 national runner-up Wisconsin-La Crosse, Beloit, North Central, Luther, Concordia (Illinois) and Kalamazoo.

The regional winners will advance to the D-III World Series, May 27 to June 2 in Appleton, Wis.

Harness season opens

Running Aces Harness Park will open its 53-day live racing season Tuesday, kicking off the Columbus track's ninth season with an eight-race card.

The meet, which runs through Sept. 3, includes racing on Tuesdays, Saturdays and Sundays through July 24. Wednesdays will be added to the schedule beginning July 27. Post time is 7 p.m. on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and 6 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.

Most of the leading trainers and drivers from the 2015 season—including Nick Roland, who topped the standings with 51 victories as a trainer and 76 as a driver—will return. Admission and parking are free throughout the season.

Anderson is Big Ten's co-pitcher of the week

Gophers junior righthander Toby Anderson was chosen the Big Ten's co-pitcher of the week for the first time, after pitching a four-hit shutout in the Gophers' weekend sweep of Purdue. Anderson shared the award with Nebraska's Matt Waldron.
