Bulldogs top Huskies with big third period

• MINNESOTA DULUTH 4, ST. CLOUD STATE 2: Trailing 1-0 going into the third period Friday night, the No. 6 Bulldogs (18-10-1, 10-6-1 NCHC) staged a strong rally to beat the visiting Huskies. Jared Thomas tied the score at 3 minutes, 6 seconds. Derik Johnson's first goal of the season put UMD ahead 2-1 at 6:30 and, exactly 10 minutes later, Justin Crandall's power-play goal made it 3-1. Joey Benik scored at 17:52 to get the Huskies (12-14-1, 7-9-1) within a goal, but they couldn't get the tying score and UMD's Adam Krause added an empty-netter with five seconds left.

• NORTH DAKOTA 4, DENVER 2: Nick Schmaltz's unassisted goal at 12:10 of the third period was the winner for No. 2 UND (20-6-2, 11-5-1). It broke a 2-all tie and Michael Parks followed with a power-play goal at 15:17. Joey LaLeggia and Quentin Shore scored for the No. 9 Pioneers (16-10-1, 9-8), who were outshot 36-20.

BIG TEN

• OHIO STATE 2, WISCONSIN 1: Nick Schilkey's goal with 1:56 left in the second period, broke a tie and gave the Buckeyes (8-15-2, 3-8 Big Ten) a victory over the visiting Badgers (2-19-4, 0-9-2). Joel Rumpel kept Wisconsin competitive with 40 saves, but Corbin McGuire scored the Badgers' only goal late in the opening period. Christian Frey had 23 stops for Ohio State.

• MICHIGAN STATE 3, PENN STATE 0: Mackenzie MacEachern and J.T. Stenglein scored less than three minutes apart in the middle of the second period to lead the host Spartans (11-12-2, 5-4-2-2) past the No. 19 Nittany Lions (15-8-4, 7-3-1). Matt DeBlow had the other goal for Michigan State early in the third period. Jake Hildebrand stopped 28 shots for the shutout. P.J. Musico had 31 saves for Penn State.

• BEMIDJI STATE 1, NORTHERN MICHIGAN 0: Freshman Michael Bitzer stopped 25 shots and Sam Rendle scored the only goal of the game as the visiting Beavers (11-14-4, 7-10-4 WCHA) beat the Wildcats (11-12-6, 8-9-4). Rendle's second goal of the season came at 13:42 of the second period. Sam Windle and Phil Brewer got the assists. Bitzer, who has four shutouts this season, saw his goals-against average drop to 1.90.
