The Gophers volleyball team swept Indiana Purdue Fort Wayne 25-11, 25-14, 25-13 on Saturday to win the Rocket Invite in Toledo and finish nonconference play 10-1.

Sarah Wilhite had 16 kills and Daly Santana 15 to lead Minnesota. Paige Tapp was also a force at the net with a career-high 10 blocks while Alyssa Goehner had a match-high 14 digs.

The No. 17 Gophers hit .353, the IPFW Mastodons .103 in a match that took only 1 hour, 13 minutes.

Wilhite, a sophomore outside hitter, was named the tournament MVP. She had 42 kills and hit .386 in three victories.

Santana and Adrianna Nora also were named to the all-tournament team.

The Gophers open conference play against Ohio State at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Sports Pavilion.

U shut out in soccer

Sophomore Amanda Lulek's goal in the 33rd minute gave Iowa a 1-0 victory over the Gophers in Big Ten women's soccer at Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium.

The Hawkeyes (8-1, 3-0) and Minnesota (4-5, 1-2) had tied their past four meetings.

Lulek's goal was her first of the season in three matches played and spoiled Senior Night for the Gophers.

• Seimone Augustus scored 10 points and had four steals as the USA Basketball women's national team defeated China 99-75 on Saturday in Paris in an international tournament. Lindsay Whalen, Augustus' Lynx teammate, had five assists.

• The Gophers went 11-6 in singles and 7-2 in doubles on Saturday on the second day of the 13-team Minnesota Invitational in women's tennis. Tereza Brichacova, Aria Lambert and Mehvish Safdar all reached the finals in their singles flights. Brichacova, competing in the strongest 16-player draw, beat players from Iowa and Iowa State in straight sets.
