Mallory Burnham of the University of St. Thomas won the 100-meter hurdles and took second in the 100 by three-thousands of a second on Saturday in the Division III outdoor track and field championships at Ohio Wesleyan in Delaware, Ohio.

The senior from Eagan won the hurdles in 14.02 seconds and had the same rounded-up time of 11.93 in the 100 as the winner, so officials had to go to another decimal. She lost 11.924 to 11.921.

Burnham also anchored the Tommies’ second-place 4x100 relay (46.67). Other relay members were Erika and Angela Tipp and Christina Rozeske.

Freshman Kimber Meyer of Macalester was fourth in the 5,000 (16:37.16).

On Friday, Carleton sophomore Amelia Campbell won the heptathlon with 5,221 points — the third-best Division III score of all time. Teammate Kao Sutton won the discus (155-2) on Saturday.

The Tommies placed fifth in the team standings with 27 points, Carleton tied for eighth with 21.

The 1,500 was the one men’s event MIAC runners dominated at the national meet. Three finished in a pack behind the winner. Paul Escher of St. Olaf was second (3:48.12), Zach Haskins of Bethel third (3:48.89) and Grant Wintheiser of St. Olaf fourth (3:48.90). The Oles finished 23rd as a team with 13 points.

St. Thomas goes to 2-0

St. Thomas’ baseball team rallied from behind twice to edge Baldwin-Wallace 5-4 in the NCAA Division III World Series in Appleton, Wis., to stay in the winners’ bracket at 2-0.

Baldwin-Wallace (30-19) scored two runs in the top of the fifth to take a 3-1 lead, but the Tommies tied it in the bottom of the inning on Jack Hogan’s triple and a wild pitch. Ben Podobinski’s RBI single in the sixth made it 4-3. He was 3-for-4 with two runs scored.

The Tommies (39-8), who have won 14 games in a row, scored an unearned run in the seventh for a 5-3 lead. J.D. Dorgan singled for his 200th hit, stole second and came home on a throwing error.

The Yellowjackets got within a run on three consecutive one-out singles in the ninth.

Softball team wins, too

St. Thomas scored four runs in the sixth inning to beat Montclair State 4-3 on Saturday in the losers’ bracket of the NCAA Division III softball tournament in Tyler, Texas. Mary Rentz’s double drove in two runs.

Kendra Bowe pitched six-plus innings and gave up all three runs, including two in the bottom of the seventh. Katie Jo Delislie got the final three outs.
