The Gophers softball team improved to 17-3 — the best 20-game start in school history — with a 6-2 victory over Drake on Sunday in the team’s final game at Oklahoma State’s Mizuno Classic in Stillwater, Okla.

Kaitlyn Richardson drove in two runs, giving her 24 RBI this season and 105 in her Gophers career. Sara Moulton earned her 96th career win, pitching 4⅔ innings and striking out seven. Nikki Anderson took over in the fifth inning and earned the first Gophers save of the season.

Mark Tatera’s RBI single drove in the only run for the Gophers in a 4-1 loss to North Carolina Greensboro in Myrtle Beach. S.C.

Max Povse pitched a five-hitter for Greensboro, outdueling the Gophers’ Ben Meyer, who gave up one run and five hits and struck out six in seven innings. The Spartans broke it open on Jordan McDonald’s tiebreaking two-run single in the eighth against Lance Thonvold.

Grunewald places 10th in 3,000

Gabe Grunewald of Team USA Minnesota placed 10 in the women’s 3,000 meters at the world indoor track championships in Sopot, Poland. Grunewald’s time of 9 minutes, 11.76 seconds was more than 16 seconds behind winner Genzebe Dibaba of Ethiopia (8:55.04). Grunewald’s Team USA Minnesota teammate, Heather Kampf, was disqualified for a lane violation after taking eighth in the 1,500.
