Gophers seniors finish 1-2 in hammer throw at Big Ten meet

Seniors Miach Hegerle and Quentin Mege of the Gophers took 1-2 Friday in the hammer throw at the Big Ten men’s track and field meet in Columbus, Ohio.

Hegerle won his second title in the hammer with a toss of 214 feet, 4 inches. He also won the event in 2010. Mege, throwing with a broken hand, threw 205-2 for second place. He was the defending champion.

North picks McKenzie

Larry McKenzie was named the boys’ basketball coach at Minneapolis North.

He has had a lot of success in the City Conference. In his nine seasons at Henry, the Patriots won six section titles in a row and four consecutive Class 3A state championships from 2000-03.

After serving as coach and general manager of the Minnesota Ripknees minor league basketball team, McKenzie was the Holy Angels coach from 2008 until he left after this past season.

 

U advances in tennis

The Gophers edged Virginia Commonwealth 4-3 in the first round of the NCAA men’s tennis tournament at the Charlottesville (Va.) Regional. With the match tied 3-3, Rok Bonin of the Gophers (15-10) beat Max Wennakoski 7-6 (7-3), 0-6, 6-4 for the decisive point. Wennakoski was ranked No. 29 nationally, Bonin No. 53.

Minnesota will play No. 2 Virginia, which routed Fairleigh Dickinson 4-0 it its opening match, in the regional final at 2 p.m. Saturday. The Cavaliers are 25-0.

 

Moulton gets 30th win

Gophers junior Sara Moulton beat Penn State 4-0 on a two-hitter in the Big Ten softball tournament quarterfinals in Lincoln, Neb. Moulton (30-9) struck out nine. Minnesota took a 2-0 lead in the second inning on Alex Davis’ run-scoring double and a Penn State error that allowed Davis to score.

 

U shut out on diamond

Nebraska’s Christian DeLeon, who gave up three hits in six innings, and Dylan Vogt, who gave up two in the three innings, shut out the Gophers 6-0 at Siebert Field. Josh Scheffert went 2-for-4 with three RBI for the Cornhuskers (22-25, 13-6 Big Ten). His solo homer in the eighth inning made it 2-0. Tom Windle of the Gophers (28-17, 11-5) gave up one run and eight hits in 7⅓ innings.

• Forwards Jack Ramsey and Max Coatta of Minnetonka High School have committed to play for the Penticton Vees of the British Columbia Hockey League this coming season. Ramsey is a junior, Coatta a senior.
