Windle baffles Michigan hitters as U wins conference opener

Sophomore lefthander Tom Windle threw a four-hitter and struck out 13 as the visiting Gophers beat Michigan 3-1 on Friday in their Big Ten baseball opener. Windle lowered his ERA to 0.75 with his fourth consecutive complete game.

Outfielder Andy Henkemeyer went 2-for-4 with one RBI for the Gophers (16-11).

Erik Van Rooyen of the Gophers shot an even-par 70 in his second round in the U.S. Intercollegiate Tournament at Stanford. The senior from South Africa is at 136, tied for third place, four shots behind the two co-leaders. The Gophers are 14th in team standings.

• Northwestern beat the Gophers 6-2 in softball in Evanston, Ill., on Amy Letourneau’s no-hitter. She walked nine hitters.

• Senior Jared Anderson placed 10th in the 100-yard breaststroke in the NCAA men’s swimming and diving championships in Indianapolis. His time of 52.90 seconds was a school record.

• Three MIAC players were named to the American Hockey Coaches Association’s All-America second team. They are St. Olaf junior forward Jeff Harris, St. Thomas sophomore defenseman Michael Krieg and St. John’s freshman goalie Saxton Soley.

• The Minnesota Swarm set a franchise scoring record, beating Philadelphia 20-11 at Xcel Energy Center.
