CANCUN, MEXICO -- Junior Kiona Kellogg scored a career-high 20 points and had 12 rebounds as the Gophers women's basketball team beat James Madison University 80-62 on Friday in its second game of the Cancun Challenge.

Point guard Rachel Banham, who matched Kellogg's 20 points, and forward Micaella Riche with 15 points and nine rebounds, also were in double figures for the Gophers (5-1). Banham's offensive production was hardly unusual. She is averaging a team-high 18.8 points per game, Kellogg just 8.5. She had not scored more than eight points in the Gophers' first five games.

This was Kellogg's first double-double of the season and third of her career.

Kellogg, a 6-1 forward from Ames, Iowa, was 7-for-16 from the field and six of eight on free-throw attempts.

Ahead by three points, the Gophers used a 14-1 run to take a 34-18 lead with 4 minutes left in the first half and led by 41-28 at halftime. Riche had 11 points and five rebounds in the first half, in which the Gophers shot 53.1 percent.

The Gophers shot 49.2 percent from the field while the Dukes of Harrisonburg, Va., hit a season-low 28.2 percent. The Gophers outrebounded James Madison 51-37 and also outscored the Dukes 38-22 in the paint.

Guard Kirby Burkholder led James Madison (2-3) with 19 points. The Dukes, 1-2 against the U all-time, got within nine points of the Gophers twice in the second half but also fell behind by as many as 21 twice, at 56-35 and 80-59 in the last minute.

On Thursday in Cancun, the Gophers lost to Richmond 58-46 while James Madison beat Wisconsin-Green Bay 89-86 in overtime behind Tarik Hislop's 32 points. Hislop was 5-for-20 shooting against the Gophers and had only 12 points.

After her team's eight-game winning streak going back to last season ended, Gophers coach Pam Borton said her team needed "other players to step up and make shots" besides Banham and Riche. They both had 12 points against Richmond.

The difference the next day was Kellogg. She went from one bucket and three points in her first game in Cancun to a career-high in the second.

Shocking to the Dukes.
