Chart: The rising cost of U nonrevenue sports coaches

The salaries of the five highest-paid nonrevenue coaches at the University of Minnesota (not until next year, in the case of volleyball coach Hugh McCutcheon) are evidence of the rapid rise in coaching earnings the past decade, even within programs that don't make money:

JOHN ANDERSON, baseball

Base: $204,000 • 2010-11 bottom line: Deficit of 1.39 million • 2003-04 base: $87,550

HUGH McCUTCHEON, volleyball (for 2012-2013)

Base: $150,000, plus $50,000 supplemental • 2010-11 bottom line: Deficit of $1.024 million • 2003-04 base: $113,509, plus $19,000 media (Mike Hebert coach)

PAM BORTON, women's basketball

Base: $315,000, plus $140,000 supplemental • 2010-11 bottom line: Deficit of $2.001 million • 2003-04 base: $150,000, plus $40,000 supplemental and media

J ROBINSON, wrestling

Base: $136,000, plus $10,000 supplemental • 2010-11 bottom line: Deficit of $816,099 • 2003-04 base: $70,722

BRAD FROST, women's hockey

Base: $102,000, plus $5,000 media • 2010-11 bottom line: Deficit of $690,920 • 2003-04 base: $87,550, plus $5,000 media (Laura Halldorson)
