After working for the past decade under a series of one-year contracts, Gophers baseball coach John Anderson has a new level of job security. The Gophers athletic department announced on Tuesday that Anderson has agreed to an extension that will keep him under contract through the 2016 season.
Anderson, in his 31st season as Minnesota head coach, has 1,080 career victories -- the most ever in the Big Ten.
"There is no one more deserving of this than John," said Gophers athletic director Joel Maturi. "Not only is he the winningest coach in the Big Ten, the manner in which he runs his program is remarkable."
The Gophers have made 17 NCAA tournament appearance along with winning nine Big Ten Tournament titles and nine first-place Big Ten regular season crowns under Anderson. He has also played a lead role in securing funding for a new on-campus ballpark. Groundbreaking on the new stadium is slated to begin in June, with play starting in 2013.
"This extension allows me to continue my fundraising work to help build a new ballpark on campus that remains a critical need for the program," Anderson said. "My number one goal over the next five years is to leave the program in better shape than when I became the head coach in 1981."
