Village Green Golf Course, located just off Interstate 94 in Moorhead, Minnesota, is owned by the City of Moorhead and is a 6728-yard par-72 municipal course. Once you find the course, you'll see it's a very nice facility.
The clubhouse is a nice building with a traditional layout. It has a small grill called Scobey's that serves sandwiches, chicken and other standard course fare. There's also has a nice patio area overlooking the putting green and a small sitting area. A topnotch practice area, including a driving range with numerous distance markers, a very large putting green and a sand and pitching area, is just across the street.
The first nine holes (currently the back nine) were built in 1981 and the second nine was added in 1994 (now the front nine). They are distinctly different, as the new nine is far more compact than the old. The course has three sets of tees and there's excellent tee box signage with distances and colored maps of each hole. Ball washers and benches are on the blue and white tees, as well as the forward tees. There's a new permanent bathroom near hole #6 and portable bathrooms about every five holes. Vertical fairway distance markers are easy to find at 200, 150 and 100 yards.
The ample water and sand hazards are sure to be a challenge for lesser-skilled players. The fairways appear to be wide, with few trees to block your way and you'll think the course looks easy. It's not. Golfers will have to contend with strategically placed hazards and contoured greens, and the course plays true to its 6728-yard length.Village Green is a favorite of locals and the staff should be proud of its course. The maintenance crew is outstanding. Even though the course experienced 3 inches of rain the day before we visited, the greens and tee boxes looked well tended and the fairways looked great. At only $29 for a weekend round, the course is also an excellent value. Hackers visiting the Fargo/Moorhead area should check it out.
