Nestled along the Rainy River on the edge of International Falls, Minnesota, Falls Golf Club was a very pleasant surprise. This Joel Goldstrand-designed course is only 6,632 yards, but has a 129 slope, easily making up for its modest length.
The course also has a nice practice area to warm up at before your round. We had heard it was a nice course, but didn't expect to find it to be so well kept. When we arrived for our tee time, it was raining so we sat in the clubhouse for almost an hour drinking coffee (they only charged us for 1 cup and we had 3) waiting for it to stop. When we did get out, the pro paired us up with a local player as we had never played the course before. We found him to be a very friendly guy who provided us with some valuable course knowledge.
The day we played the temperature was in the 40s and it had rained a lot a few days prior to our visit. Despite all of the rain, the greens still were rolling very fast and true. The fairways were well tended. The course has a woodlands feel to it. There are a couple of holes along the Rainy River that really add to the aesthetic experience. It is a course that rewards a good shot and can be punitive on a poor one. It is how a course should be. The clubhouse was very comfortable with a large fieldstone fireplace. The people were very friendly and hospitable. We didn't get a chance to eat there, but they appeared to have a nice variety of food options available. The food is fairly-priced and if you want to really work on your game, an all-day lesson (including lunch) can be had for less than a round at a fancy resort course.
Although Falls Golf Club isn't the northern most course in Minnesota (that is reserved for Warroad Estates in Warroad), it is a reasonably-priced course, on the Minnesota/Canadian border with just enough challenge to make you want to return on your next vacation. If you are planning a trip to Rainy Lake or Voyageurs National Park, don't forget to pack your clubs.
