Michael Rand started RandBall with hopes that he could keep lies from conquering the minds of the weak. So far, he's only succeeded in using the word "redacted" a lot. He welcomes suggestions, news tips, links of pure genius, and pictures of pets in Halloween costumes here, though he already knows he will regret that last part.

Tuesday (A game decided by a long snapper) edition: Wha' Happened?

If you stayed up and watched the snooze-fest on the West Coast -- Game 2 of the MNF doubleheader between the Chargers and Raiders -- then you will never take a long snappper for granted again.

Pro Bowl long snapper Jon Condo (also a charter member of the all-name team) was knocked out of a tight game with an injury. The Raiders, as is typical in the NFL, do not have a bona fide backup long snapper. What they have is akin to an emergency catcher in baseball -- someone who can do it in a pinch but who doesn't really practice it all that much.

That showed when his replacement, Travis Goethel, came into the the game.

These things happened on three second-half punts (you can see for yourself right here):

*Ground ball snap, leading to not getting the punt away.

*Good snap but blown blocking by the line, leading to a blocked punt.

*Another ground ball snap, leading again to not getting the punt away.

The Chargers converted all three botches into field goals, helping turn a 10-6 game into a comfortable lead in an eventual 22-14 victory.

We wrote recently about Kyle Stelter, a local guy who latched on as a long snapper with the Sacramento Mountain Lions of the United Football League. Several NFL teams have been impressed by him. If Condo is out any length of time, maybe this is his chance? The Raiders certainly won't go into Week 2 with Goethel handling things.
