Michael Rand started RandBall with hopes that he could convince the world to love jumpsuits as much as he does. So far, he's only succeeded in using the word "redacted" a lot. He welcomes suggestions, news tips, links of pure genius, and pictures of pets in Halloween costumes here, though he already knows he will regret that last part.

Stu's Hunt Down: Bob Lee, former Vikings QB/punter

QB, punter, front-man for an indie band, or all three?

QB, punter, front-man for an indie band, or all three?

Commenter Stu does his thing every week, hunting down a perhaps forgotten former Twin Cities athlete. This week, you will love his work even more than usual. Stu?

------------

The Huntdown

Name: Bob Lee

Claim to Fame, Minnesota: did two stints (1969-72, 1975-78) for your Minnesota Vikings, both as a punter and a backup quarterback. Perhaps best remembered as the starting quarterback of the Mud Bowl in 1977 (Fran Tarkenton broke his ankle earlier that season on a sack by an 8-year-old Brett Favre Cincinnati’s Gary Burley), a game the Vikings won 14-7.

Claim to Fame, Everywhere Else: acquired the nickname “the General” during his run with the Atlanta Falcons and former Vikings coach Norm Van Brocklin, when he replaced a banged-up Dick Shiner as the team’s quarterback. Enjoy SI’s description of Lee as some sort of unspeakable man-bird: “He is lean from his ankles up, with a small birdlike head perched on a slim neck, and a freckled face dominated by a beaked nose.” Later in the article, Van Brocklin refers to Los Angeles as “Fairyland.” Kobe Bryant, Joakim Noah, Tracy Morgan and Cee Lo Green could not be reached for comment*.

Where He Is Now: served as the athletic director for his alma mater, the University of the Pacific, and is now best known as the father of former Nebraska QB Zac Lee and Fox News Channel anchor Jenna LeeHere’s a clip of Jenna interviewing him in 2009.

Is He on Twitter: no.

Glorious Randomness: you must watch the Mud Bowl post-game show (fast-forward to the 5:00 mark). O.J. Simpson waving to the crowd; Brent Musberger, Phyllis George, Irv Cross, and Jimmy the Greek in the studio; and Minnesota Supreme Court Justice Alan Page going off on the officials, proving that he’s ONE OF US. It will make your day, and that’s the RandBall’s Stu Guarantee.

*Topical zinger!
