Michael Rand started RandBall with hopes that he could convince the world to love jumpsuits as much as he does. So far, he's only succeeded in using the word "redacted" a lot. He welcomes suggestions, news tips, links of pure genius, and pictures of pets in Halloween costumes here, though he already knows he will regret that last part.

TFD: End your day with Stu's Hunt Down of ex-North Star Derian Hatcher

Posted by: Michael Rand under Sports Updated: December 2, 2010 - 4:42 PM

Bask in the glory of that hockey hair and Stu's Hunt Down. We'll be in transit tomorrow, but with our new Droid ... is there really an excuse not to drop at least a couple of posts? Probably not. For now: Stu ...

-----------------

Name: Derian Hatcher

Claim to Fame, Minnesota: the Michigan native was the penultimate first-round draft choice of the Minnesota North Stars in 1990 and the defenseman joined the team in 1991. His plus-minus of –27 in 1992-93 was the lowest on the team (yes, even lower than Tommy Sjödin).

Claim to Fame, Everywhere Else: while not a superstar like Brian Bellows, Hatcher became a mainstay of the Dallas Stars, logging a decade with the team and serving as the squad’s captain during their 1999 Stanley Cup-winning season. He is the first American-born captain of an NHL champion. He went on to sign a lucrative free agent deal with the Red Wings, but a knee injury marred his first and only season with Detroit, and his contract was bought out after the 2004-2005 lockout. Hatcher finished his career with the Philadelphia Flyers and retired in 2009 after having his knee replaced. I endorse that decision. He also played on two US Olympic squads, broke the living daylights out of Jeremy Roenick’s jaw and made Sidney Crosby bleed his own blood. He was inducted into the US Hockey Hall of Fame this past October.

Where He Is Now: he is the Player Development Coach for the Flyers, and lives in New Jersey with his wife and five kids.

Is He On Twitter: he is not.

Glorious Randomness: during the NHL lockout, Hatcher, along with other hockey notables like Chris Chelios and Sean Avery, played for the Motor City Mechanics of United Hockey League. In keeping with the spirit of a team that just sounds like it would’ve faced off against Reggie Dunlop and the Charlestown Chiefs, Mechanics coach Steve Shannon was suspended for the remainder of the 2005 season after putting a $200 bounty on an opposing player. Hockey wonks will note that this is $100 more than was placed on Tim McCracken, the head coach and chief punk on that Syracuse team.
