PGA notes: Day 3 at Valhalla

  • Updated: August 10, 2014 - 1:23 AM

Toss that card

Vijay Singh: In a tournament oozing with story lines, the 51-year-old Singh put himself in position to join the kids until Saturday. In prime conditions to score (the course average was a record 69.5) he posted a 2-over 73 and tumbled 33 spots into a tie for 50th place.

Keep that card

Bernd Wiesberger: The “who’s that guy?” in a group of household names at the top of the leaderboard was on fire Saturday with a bogey-free 6-under 65. He birdied the final three holes to get to 12 under for the championship. The combined length of those final three putts was 3 feet, 6 inches. Until this week Wiesberger had never posted an under-par round in five previous major championship starts.

On the course with ...

Jonas Blixt: The low scores and jam-packed leaderboard are evidence enough Saturday was a day to score at Valhalla. But Blixt really took advantage of the soft greens and forward tee placements. He drove the green on the par-4 fourth hole, leaving a short eagle putt. Blixt then stuck his tee shot within inches of the cup on the par-3 eighth hole.

PGA moment

Jason Day made perhaps one of the oddest pars you’ll ever see in professional golf, let alone a major. After yanking his drive over a creek and into a hazard at No. 2, Day’s ball was identified and playable in the heavy rough. But to get there the Aussie first had to hike up his pantlegs and wade through calf-deep water. Wearing what looked to be casual weekend shorts, Day muscled the shot through the fairway and converted the up-and-down for an anything-but-routine 4.

Chip shots

• Looking for Sunday magic? Phil Mickelson (71.09) and Steve Stricker (71.35) entered the week with two of the five lowest scoring averages in PGA Championship history. They are in the top 10 heading into the final round.

• Kevin Chappell is the only player in the field with two bogey-free rounds this week.

• So much rain fell Saturday morning the PGA actually moved the pin location at No. 18 to higher ground after water pooled around the pin.

Key hole

372-yard, par-4 4th: Forty-eight of the 74 players to make the weekend cut scored a birdie or better at the fourth on Saturday. Players averaged a ridiculously low 3.31 strokes. Only one other hole, the 18th, gave up an eagle.

Quote of the day

“Seems like 4 or 5 under is about even par today.”

Adam Scott, who shot 5-under 66 on Saturday, or around even par in his book.
