By the end of the week, the first portion of the 2014 Big Ten college football season will be over. Confused? Perhaps "spring football" isn't on your sports planning calendar, but for the new-look Big Ten, with its soon-to-be 14 teams, the seeds of a successful fall have been planted in these spring weeks. Three schools hold their spring games this weekend, and then Big Ten college football fans will be forced into their annual summer hibernation. Inside on page C8, our college football writer, Joe Christensen, gives a spring update on the 14 teams — Maryland and Rutgers join — that will make up the Big Ten East and West divisions when the real games start in late August.
