It’s not unprecedented in the world of sports — the Daytona 500 comes to mind — but, because of winter’s meddlesome ways, the biggest weekend of the spring high school sports season is also going to be the first weekend of large-scale competition. Virtually every team in the metro will be in action. Many will be making up postponed games, but there are three big events that will jostle for the spotlight.

TRACK AND FIELD

Hamline Elite Meet: Owing to its tradition of inviting the top-performing athletes through the early stages of the season, the Elite meet generally lives up to its name. Meet organizers are still accepting applications from individuals based on results from both indoor and outdoor meets. Fans can expect to see St. Francis’ Maggie Ewen, one of the top discus throwers and shot putters in the country, shoot for another sweep of those events. Missing, however, will be Hopkins sprinter Taylor Anderson, as the Royals are hosting an invitational of their own. Friday, at Hamline University, 6 p.m.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Edina Invitational: This is traditionally the best dual-meet tournament of the regular season, and 2013 is no different. The eight-team lineup of Blake, Breck, Mahtomedi, Maple Grove, Mounds View, Rochester Mayo, Wayzata and the host Hornets is stronger top to bottom than will be found at the state tournament in June. First round begins at 8 a.m. with finals set for about 2 p.m,. at the Edina Community Center.

BOYS’ GOLF

Tri-State Invitational: This 24-team, two-day meet (Friday and Saturday) at Edinburgh USA in Brooklyn Park is aptly named as teams from North Dakota and Wisconsin arrive to face some of Minnesota’s best. Friday’s shotgun start begins at 9 a.m., and Saturday’s second round commences at 11 a.m.
