BOYS' HOCKEY

Last-minute goal wards off upset bid, keeps Edina alive

CLASS 2A

• SECTION 2: There have been several upsets in the section tournaments this year, but Princeton University recruit Matt Nelson didn't want his top-seeded Edina Hornets to be the latest giant to stumble. Nelson's power-play goal with 49 seconds left was the game-winner, giving Edina a 5-4 victory over fourth-seeded Bloomington Jefferson in the section semifinals Saturday at Braemar Arena in Edina. The Hornets had a slim lead after two periods, but the Jaguars stormed out of the gate in the third period by scoring two goals in the first 85 seconds to snag a 4-3 lead. Miguel Fidler scored the tying goal at 12:26 of the third period before Nelson's winner. Jono Lindquist scored twice for Jefferson. Andy Jordahl tallied two goals for Edina. ... Third-seeded Burnsville scored once in the second period and once in the third to hold off second-seeded Prior Lake for a 2-1 victory. Burnsville goaltender Chris Mallon kept the Lakers out of his net until a puck slipped past him in final seconds. He finished with 36 saves.

• SECTION 7: One goal was a season-saver, the other a game-winner. Avery Peterson scored twice for Grand Rapids in the Thunderhawks' 2-1, double-overtime victory over Elk River. The third-seeded Elks scored the game's first goal in the waning minutes of the third period, but Peterson evened the score at 1-1 when he rerouted the puck into the net with only 10 seconds left. He scored again in the second overtime by slapping a shot into the upper-left corner of the net. It was Grand Rapid's fourth overtime victory this season. Elk River's MacLean Berglove had an impressive night in the net, stopping 36 of 38 shots in the loss. ... Both top-seeded Duluth East and fourth-seeded Cloquet/Esko/Carlton had plenty of penalty minutes, but neither team could find a comfortable lead until Ryan Lundgren slipped in two third-period goals, helping the Greyhounds a 3-0 victory. Lundgren also scored in the second, giving the senior a hat trick. Dylan Parker was perfect in the net for Duluth East, stopping 15 shots.

• SECTION 1: Top-seeded Lakeville North and fourth-seeded Farmington were tied after the second period, but the Panthers blew the game open in the final period with three goals to win 5-2. Jack Poehling and Jack Diercks each scored a pair of goals, and the Lakeville North defense held the Tigers to a total of only 11 shots on goal. ... Lakeville South scored once in each period, getting goals from Justin Doeden, Patrick Lauderdale and Tyler Schumacher, to defeat Rochester Mayo 3-2. Ryan Martin had two third-period goals for Mayo, while Spartans goalie Case Hansen had 45 saves.

• SECTION 4: Robb Stautz completed his hat trick five minutes into the third period, giving Roseville a lead the sixth-seeded Raiders would hold until the final buzzer of a 6-5 victory over third-seeded Tartan. The teams swapped goals in the first and second periods, entering the final period tied at 5-5 before Stautz made the difference with his goal. Jake Jackson scored three goals for Tartan. ... Seventh-seeded North St. Paul had visions of upsets on its mind against second-seeded White Bear Lake, scoring three goals in the first period to jump out to an early two-goal lead. But the Bears survived the scare, scoring two goals in each of the next two periods to outlast the Polars 5-3. Jake Wahlin had his hand in four of White Bear Lake's goals, scoring once and racking up three assists. Justin Oliver scored twice for North St. Paul.

• SECTION 5: Top-seeded Blaine shut out eighth-seeded Osseo, rolling to a 4-0 victory behind two goals from Brandon Notermann. The Orioles took only 13 shots on goal and failed to convert any of their three power-play chances. ... Fourth-seeded Champlin Park found the net with only 15 seconds remaining to tie the score and force overtime against fifth-seeded Anoka. A goal in the second overtime gave Champlin Park a 2-1 victory.

CLASS 1A

• SECTION 1: Ben Weir's go-ahead goal in the final minutes of the third period proved to be the difference, and top-seeded Rochester Lourdes beat fourth-seeded Northfield 5-4. The Raiders scored three times in the second period to take a 3-2 lead, but Lourdes scored three in the third for the victory. Jack Berkel tallied 27 saves in the victory for the Eagles.
