Adrian Peterson misses practice, still probable to play Sunday

Vikings running back Adrian Peterson did not practice Friday as the team wrapped up its preparation for its Week 9 game in Seattle. Peterson is still dealing with soreness in his left ankle, according to coach Leslie Frazier. So the running back was held out of practice Friday as a precaution, instead doing some work in the pool and other rehab exercises to aid his ankle.

“He’ll be ready to go on Sunday,” Frazier asserted. “We just wanted to give him a little rest prior to the game.”

Peterson is listed as probable on the Vikings’ official injury report.

“He was a little sore on Wednesday,” Frazier said. “He did all right [Thursday]. And we were talking this morning and thought, ‘Why not get some rest and get some treatment?’ And he should be fresher come Sunday. So he knows everything we’ve got in the game plan. He’s pretty sharp on the things we were doing on Wednesday and Thursday and even Monday.”

Cornerback Antoine Winfield, whose dealing with a minor knee issue, was also limited Friday as part of the Vikings’ plans to occasionally cut back his practice time to make sure he remains as fresh as possible for the long haul.

In other news:

  • Frazier said he had made a decision on who would be his second starting cornerback alongside Winfield. But the Vikings coach refused to specify who it was Friday as a strategic matter. “What time do we play? 3 Central? That’s when we’ll probably announce it,” Frazier said. Rookie Josh Robinson and third year defensive back A.J. Jefferson both have been competing for that role.
  • The Vikings have had their final roster spot open since last Friday when they placed cornerback Chris Cook on injured reserve with a broken arm. It appears that spot could remain open through the weekend. Only 46 players can be active on game day. So it won’t really hurt the Vikings much. But Frazier said Friday afternoon that the team would not leave that 53rd spot open much longer.
  • Frazier is encouraged with Mistral Raymond’s progress and still plans on getting the second-year safety some playing time in Seattle. Raymond is listed as questionable as he comes back from a five-game absence due to a dislocated ankle. Frazier has said all along that Raymond would return to the starting lineup once it’s clear he’s 100 percent healthy. But the Vikings coach also said that Jamarca Sanford’s improvement has been notable and could earn him some additional playing time even when Raymond is fully healthy. Said Frazier: “Jamarca’s done enough where we want to pay attention to him. We want to see how he plays again this weekend when he’s in there. He’s done a good job.”
