A high-speed chase on roads in two northern Minnesota counties by law enforcement ended with the suspect dying from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound in Bemidji, authorities said.

Monday's pursuit in Beltrami and Cass counties was the second time in four days that law officers tried to nab the man, initially wanted on suspicion of driving on a suspended license, according to the Minnesota Department of Public Safety (DPS).

The identity of the man, who died in his car near Bemidji High School at Division Street and Hidden Trail Court, has yet to be released.

According to the DPS:

Already on the lookout from the fruitless pursuit on Friday, a State Patrol trooper spotted the suspect's vehicle about 2 p.m. Monday heading south on County Road 23 north of Bemidji.

The suspect eluded the trooper, but he was spotted again by a Leach Lake Tribal police officer and Cass County Sheriff's Office deputies at 3:17 p.m. heading west on Hwy. 2 near Norway Beach in Cass County. The pursuit was joined by additional agencies and topped 100 miles per hour.

Officers put down spike strips on Hwy. 2, which disabled the suspect's car. He headed west on Division Street in Bemidji and came to a stop near Hidden Trail Court.

Officers immediately shouted commands for the suspect to leave the vehicle. Soon after, a gunshot was fired.

The driver was shot once and dead at the scene.

"The initial indication is that no officers fired their weapons," and no one else was in the vehicle, the DPS said in a statement.

An autopsy will be conducted by the Ramsey County medical examiner's officer to rule on how the man died.
