The Gophers' volleyball team will open its season with the Big Ten/ACC Challenge on Aug. 29-30 at the Sports Pavilion, playing Notre Dame the first day and Louisville the second. Wisconsin will be the other Big Ten team in the event.

The annual Diet Coke Classic will be held Sept. 12-13; Iowa State, Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Tulsa are in the field. Minnesota also will be in tournaments at Yale on Sept. 5-6 and Toledo on Sept. 19-20.

• Longtime former men's college basketball coach Don Meyer is under hospice care at his home in Aberdeen, S.D., after a long battle with cancer. Meyer spent most of his coaching career at Lipscomb (1975-1999) but also coached at Hamline (1972-75) and Northern State (1999-2010).

•  No. 6 St. Thomas rallied to beat Rose-Hulman (Ind.) 4-2 on Wednesday in an NCAA Division III regional in Moline, Ill. Colin Wendinger scattered six hits and did not allow an earned run in eight innings. J.D. • Players from the Minnesota Golf Associated beat a team of PGA players 24½ to 15½ in the MGA/PGA Cup at Oak Ridge Country Club. The team of Sammy Schultz and Jesse Polk swept its three matches to give the MGA an early lead.
