SHAWANO, Wis. — A Shawano seventh-grader has landed a spot in the Scripps National Spelling Bee next month.

Karelyn Malliet (MAL'-ee-et) recently won state competition by correctly spelling the word fulgent (FUHL'-juhnt), which means to shine brightly. Malliet says her win and chance on the national stage still seems surreal.

But, for language teacher Anne Beck, it's not all that surprising. Beck tells WLUK-TV (http://bit.ly/QIEX4U ) Malliet is self-motivated and self-directed. Malliet will compete against 280 other top spellers for $30,000 and the national trophy.

Malliet says she will review thousands of words by the time the bee rolls around May 27. She says she will rely on her skills and a pre-bee ritual. Malliet says whenever she eats candy before a spelling contest, she wins.
