Twins place Scott Diamond on waivers

Scott Diamond could have been the Opening Day starter a year ago if he wasn't recovering from offseason surgery. Now his career with the Twins could be over.
According to a league source, the Twins have placed Diamond on waivers Wednesday. If he clears, he could join a crowded rotation at Class AAA Rochester. If he clears, it would be easier for the Twins to trade him because he wouldn't need a spot on someone's 40-man roster. The Twins did that with Vance Worley on Tuesday.
There's also a chance a team will claim Diamond despite his 6-13 record and 5.43 ERA last season.
The move means that the Twins have settled on righthander Kyle Gibson as their No. 5 starter, a development first reported by the Star Tribune late last week, Righthander Samuel Deduno, also out of options, is expected to open the season in the bullpen,
